Overview to Online Security

This guide is aimed at Microsoft Windows users; in particular those using Windows XP, however, most of the references to programmes in this guide should work with other versions of Windows such as Vista.

Due to the popularity of the Windows operating systems there is a great number of programmes that will specifically attack a Windows user. This is even more true when you choose to use the internet.

In this guide we will try to point you in the right direction to help you protect yourself when you venture online. Be aware that due to your own personal surfing habits and needs, not all of what is recommended in this guide may apply to you.

We presume that you are experiencing computer problems caused by either viruses or spyware. The programmes listed below will help you remove and prevent possible problems. However, you should make an effort to use good internet practices yourself. You should take steps to minimise your exposure to viruses/spyware because in most cases it is the user is to blame.
Top 5 tips

  1. Ensure you are using a good Firewall
This could be hardware or software firewall e.g. router or zonealarm.
  2. Ensure you are using a strong Anti-Virus Product and that it is kept up-to-date.
Virus scan everything you download or receive through email.
  3. Do not open emails with attachments from people you do not know and never open attachments from people you do not know.
  4. Keep these security programmes up-to-date! If you're paying a subscription and it runs out your anti-virus will not know about new trojans, etc.
  5. Minimise SPAM before you subscribe to a mailing list - find out with whom they will share your email address.
