Pay Per Click and other advertising

Several search engines nolonger offer a free site submission.  In order for your website to be indexed you will need to pay a set fee.  This fee may will depending upon what service(s) you choose; for example, there may be a fast track option to index your website within a couple of days instead of months.

Other search engines (such as Overture and Google) offer PPC schemes that allow you to bid for a range of keywords.  Your bid will be the amount you are charged each time someone clicks on your advert and it will also determin the placement and possibly frequency for your adverts.  Obviously generic keywords/phrases will cost you more due to the increased chances of other sites bidding on those words.  For example "photography" would cost more than say "wedding photography sunderland".

In an ideal situation you would be amongst the highest bidders and therefore your adverts/sponsored links will be displayed on the first results page; typically above or to the side of the regualr search results.

When someone searches using "your keywords" they will be more likely to see your advert (thanks better placement and higher page positioning).  If the person clicks on your advert they will be directed to your website and you will be charged to agreed bid amount.  Usually these adverts appear on several other partner websites including smaller search engines which are powered by the same system.

You will typically be able to control, monitor and turn on/off your PPC advertising campagins as and when you see fit.  Some trial and error may be needed to see which keywords work for you.  You would only need to turn off certain keywords if you find they are using up too much on your money in comparison to the new leads they bring.
