Quality backlinks from Dmoz

This month we’re talking about backlinks. Backlinks is another jargon term for links that “come back” to your site via blog posts, directories, other websites and other any other web-based hyperlink. They are also known as referrals or incoming links. In the world of Google PageRank, links to your site count a lot. The more incoming links you have the better, so long as they are relevant.

Let me introduce you to Dmoz. Basically Dmoz is a very important directory to have your site listed in. www.dmoz.org

“The Open Directory Project is the largest, most comprehensive human-edited directory of the Web. It is constructed and maintained by a vast, global community of volunteer editors.”

It can sometimes take months before a moderator will get around to approving your listing but since Google, AOL and other major search engines use the dmoz for their own directory it’s vital to get in.

The dmoz Open Directory Project reviews every page submitted to their directory, and they are picky about what they include. therefore, their directory is a “trusted source” of high-quality sites for many search engines. The Open Directory powers the core directory services for the Web’s largest and most popular search engines and portals, including Netscape Search, AOL Search, Google, Lycos, HotBot, DirectHit, and hundreds of others.

In many cases, getting listed in the ODP will get your site listed fairly quickly (and free) in ALL major search engines except for Overture. Thus, it’s usually a sound investment of your time to prepare your site and submit it to ODP after launch.
Unlike a search engine like Google where you can submit your site many times over and over a directory such as ODP only allows you one submit. For this reason it’s important that you submit it to the most appropriate category to your field/service. Additionally there are rules on how to submit without being seen as spamming a whole bunch of keywords.

Remember, what matters most here is having the best title, description, and being in the most relevant category!!!
